Urban & Civic to host community history event at All Saints’ Church in Hawton, with archaeological finds form the Middlebeck development south of Newark

Residents will have the unique opportunity to get hands-on with some historical artefacts unearthed during a development project.

Urban & Civic, the master developer behind the Middlebeck project, will be hosting community archaeology event, at All Saints’ Church in the village of Hawton, on Saturday, May 31, from 10am to 3pm.

Visitors to the event will be able to learn about the history of the area, through a series of objects which have been discovered on the site dating back thousands of years.

The site is believed to have been inhabited as far back as 12,000 years ago, and in recent years, surveys by Oxford Archaeology have uncovered cremation burials and bead from the Bronze Age, and traces of an Iron Age farming community.

Archaeologists also discovered 73 well-preserved Roman kilns at a pottery site that is said to be of “national importance”.

The history event is open to all ages and to families, with activities on offer as well as information for those with an interest in history and archaeology.

There will be two sessions throughout the day, with one for special interest groups and a second for members of the public.
