Getting into the swing of golf

The first after-school golf club at Halam Primary is proving popular among pupils.

About 15 boys and girls, aged seven to 11, attend the club on Monday afternoons.

The head, Mr Graham Cullen, said the school wanted to provide pupils with the opportunity to try as many different sporting activities as possible in the hope they would find one they were interested in.

He said golf gave children who did not enjoy traditional team sports, such as cricket and football, the opportunity to set themselves targets to improve every week.

Sessions are led by Mr Russell Hullett, a former Derby County footballer, who runs Southwell-based Cosmo Soccer and Sports Academy.

Pupils learn about golfing etiquette, stance, swinging, driving and putting, using plastic clubs and large sponge balls indoors and outdoors.

He said the children were having a great time and were picking it up very well.
