A PRIMARY school caretaker has donated a surprise gift to pupils.

Mr Martin Walster, who works at Halam Primary School, gave pupils a telescope that he could no longer use at home.

The children have been learning about the solar system recently and Mr Walster hopes they will start an astronomy club.

Pupil Ruby Marson, 8, said: “We were already learning about space before it arrived so I’m happy that we can now see constellations close up.”

The children set up the telescope in the playground and saw Jupiter and its four moons.

The school plan to use the telescope as much as possible and to incorporate its use in relevant lessons.

Frankie Martin, 10, said: “It’s good to have a telescope because we have never been able to see planets before.”
