Girls are being encouraged to have the cervical cancer vaccine as part of a programme that nationally could save up to 400 lives a year.

Pupils at The Minster School, Southwell, are among those being offered the jab, despite postponing vaccinations for a short time in October after the death of a girl in Coventry.

Natalie Morton (14) died hours after receiving the Cervarix injection, but a postmortem revealed her death was due to an underlying medical condition.

Minster pupils to have had the vaccine include Anna Jevons (16) and her sister, Olivia (14) of Lowe’s Wong, Southwell.

Olivia said the death of Big Brother contestant Jade Goody, in March last year, made her and her friends realise the potential dangers of cervical cancer.

Anna said: “It is a two-second scratch that can protect you from something that potentially could kill you. It was the obvious choice to take up the offer.
