Tesco Express, Balderton customer chose YMCA Newark and Sherwood to receive £5,000 as part of Tesco Golden Grants initiative

A customer who found a golden token chose to donate £5,000 to a charity that supports young people, families and the community.

Customers in Tesco Express, Balderton were given the opportunity to take part in the national chain initiative — Golden Grant as part of the Tesco Stronger Starts campaign.

The YMCA Newark and Sherwood was one of the three charities in the area that shoppers could vote to receive the £5,000 grant.

There was a bag with 99 blue tokens and customers were asked to pull one until a lucky customer pulled the golden token.

Gail Brammer was the lucky one to pull the golden token and chose to donate the money to the YMCA charity.

Executive director at YMCA Newark and Sherwood, Steffen Benbow said: “ I want to express our sincere appreciation to Tesco and its customers for the generous donation through their Golden Grants initiative.

“This £5000 contribution will significantly benefit our YMCA Creative Academy, enabling us to provide valuable opportunities for young individuals in our community.

“With this support, we can continue nurturing creativity and fostering personal growth among our youth.

“Thank you, Tesco, for your commitment to making a difference in the lives of young people."

The Golden Grants take place twice a year as part of the £5 million Stronger Starts grant giveaway programme in partnership with the charity Groundwork UK.

The grants help schools and children’s groups provide nutritious food and healthy activities that support young people’s physical health and mental wellbeing, such as breakfast clubs or snacks, as well as purchasing equipment for healthy activities.

Store manager at Tesco Express Balderton, Chelsea Gregory said: “It is a national event and 102 stores got chosen to hold this event in store after being recognised for everything it does in the local community.”
