A village pub has won a national award for the standard of food served there.

The Waggon and Horses in Halam was named best catering newcomer in a competition run by Thwaites Brewery.

The tenants, Mr and Mrs Roy Wood, have been in sole charge since March last year.

They became involved with the pub around five years ago as part of a tenancy partnership.

They have years of experience in the catering industry.

Mr Wood (30) has travelled the world working in hotels and restaurants in France, Greece and Canada. Mrs Laura Wood (26) has worked in Australia.

Mr Wood is a former chef at Café Bleu, Newark.

Since taking over full-time at the Waggon and Horses the couple have used local ingredients for their food and have upgraded the interior of the pub.

They have won regional awards for their food and the pub has been included in the Michelin Guide.

“We feel the way we work and the food we produce is appreciated by people in Halam and they appreciate us being here,” said Mr Wood.
