Newark Advertiser reader letters: Grateful for their sacrifice
Each year I remember with love my dad on Remembrance Sunday.
He was fiercely proud of having served in the RAF and had ‘done his bit’ during the Second World War.
I’m proud to wear his red poppy that is now almost 20 years old, very battered with ‘dad ’ written on the back so I don’t confuse it with others.
Dad would tell me that a red poppy stood for hope, strength and resilience.
After the terrible battles of the Second World War that killed thousands on both sides, ripped up trees and destroyed the earth, still the red poppies grew defiantly out of the earth.
It is the red poppy that continues to give hope and reminds me that the freedom we enjoy today is because of people who fought, not fled, in times of conflict.
It was wonderful to see the parade in Newark. Thank you to all who have served and continue to serve us. We are grateful.
