Nottinghamshire Police aware of gravestone vandals on Bishops Drive, Southwell, according to councillor
Work to repair vandalised gravestones will be carried out in the coming months, according to a council.
Penny Rainbow, a member of Newark and Sherwood District Council and Southwell Town Council, said: “We are well aware of the situation (at the cemetery on Bishops Drive, Southwell) and we have been there with the police and our community support team.
“It is vandalism, there is about six or seven gravestones that have been pushed over.
“It started about six weeks ago, but the vandalism to the gravestones seems to have ceased at the moment, though young people are still gathering under the gate, particularly on a Friday night with alcohol.”
Mrs Rainbow said cans and bottles were often left.
“With it being a closed cemetery, the district council is now having to make good of the damage which will hopefully be undertaken in August or September,” said Mrs Rainbow.
A spokesman from Nottinghamshire Police said: “We will continue to patrol the area and we will prosecute anyone damaging graves.”
