Tomorrow and Sunday thousands of visitors are expected at Newark Showground for the pinnacle of the local farming calendar.

Newark and Nottinghamshire County Show enables farmers and breeders the opportunity to showcase their stock in pursuit of a coveted winner’s rosette.

Despite its farming heritage, the show offers so much more, as explained by Mr Adrian Johnston, the chief executive of Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society.

“Whether you are coming to Newark Showground because of a background in farming or for the entertainment, there is something here for you,” he said.

A packed programme over two days certainly offers something for all age groups, from fun-fair rides and face-painting for youngsters to nostalgia-inspired bygone farming and vintage vehicles.

Of course there are the main ring attractions including motorcycle stunts and mounted games, but there are also the many trade stands, the food hall and the flower show for those who prefer a more leisurely day out.

Many in Newark will remember visiting the show in days gone by, perhaps as a child with their parents, or through school outings.

No doubt the traditional essence of this family-inspired event is still the same, but people may be surprised by how much more is on offer.

Whatever the attractions, good weather certainly helps, but rain or shine, perhaps it’s time for people who haven’t been for a long time to rediscover the show.

Traditional events, whether in May or at any other time, need local support to ensure they continue to thrive. See you at the show.
