French visitors will join the Southwell branch of the Royal British Legion tomorrow to commemorate the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

D-Day was the first day of the Allied forces invasion of Normandy during the second world war.

French guests on a twinning visit from Sees, Normandy, will attend a ceremony on the Burgage with their host families from Southwell, Southwell town councillors, the vice-chairman of Newark and Sherwood District Council, and members of the Royal British Legion.

After the ceremony a civic reception for the French visitors will take place at the Old Court House.

The town council chairman, Mr Andy Gregory, said: “For the French it was the first day of liberation and so having them at the ceremony will be quite special.”

The ceremony starts at 5.55pm.
