Newark Half Marathon to return virtually in August
One of Newark’s biggest sporting events will look a little different this year, but organisers hope it will encourage more people to take part.
The Newark Half Marathon is set to return on the weekend of August 10 and 11, but this year will be held virtually.
Following the success of last year’s event, which saw over 700 people take part, organisers were forced to take the difficult decision to cancel the 2024 race due to scheduled road closures along the race route to facilitate the construction of the Newark Southern Link Road.
Rather than cancelling altogether, a virtual half-marathon has been organised in its place, which can be completed from anywhere.
Although the excitement of the start line, the streets lined with cheering spectators, and the fanfare of the finishing zones will be gone from this year’s race, organisers hope that the different format will make the event more accessible.
Participants can complete the full 13.1 miles at their own pace, from wherever they choose, and can split the run across both days.
A member of the organising team, Peter Davis, said: “I think the fact this year’s event is less structured will make it a lot more accessible.
“People whoever would have signed up for the race before now have an opportunity to take part in whichever way they feel most comfortable.
“They can run in the park or through the streets — even if they’re on holiday they can do it. All they have to do is run distance.
“I come from a healthcare background and so I’ve always been keen on getting more people active.”
Those that complete the full half-marathon distance, and are able to prove it using GPS data from a phone or smart watch, will be able to claim a finishers medal.
This year’s medal is made of wood and has been designed by 10-year-old Newark schoolgirl, Anna Harrison.

Peter said the organising committee is already in the process of planning the route for the 2025 race, with hopes of coming back stronger after their forced break.
