The Newark Advertiser asked its readers their views on the Labour government as they have been in power for a year

As it has now been one year since the general elections, the Advertiser found out people’s thoughts on what the party has promised and delivered so far.

The general elections took place exactly a year ago (July 4), and Labour won a total of 412 seats in Parliament.

We went out around Newark to hear people’s thoughts, not only on what the party has done so far, but also on what they could have done better.

Ilva B. said: “I haven’t been following it, it’s too depressing.

“They have got in because the Conservatives were too bad, but I don’t think any of them are any good really. I am not happy with anybody.

“You tell me how it changes from one to the other? They all blame each other for their mistakes and then they make their next mistakes.

“I am afraid I am not really impressed with any of them.

“Instead of blaming other people, they just need to change it and get on with it in their own way to improve things, and I don’t think they do.”

Her husband, Alan B. added that as he saw it, “it is all save, save, save, and what do they do? Mess, mess, mess”:

“Personally, they have set out to do things, they promise this thing and the other, and they have developed nothing, so the standards are low.

“I think they tackle too much too quickly at once, too big changes, supposed to bring all this money into the country.”

It has been a busy year for the new government, from giving the NHS a £29 billion annual boost, to a U-turn on welfare and setting up a new border security agency, as well as strengthening co-operation with France on people smuggling.

Margaret Parton said: “They can’t even agree with any of their policies, look at what is going on now?

“I have never been a Labour supporter, and they are not making anything to change that.”

John Carter said: “I think they are in a bit of trouble at the moment with the welfare cuts, but I do understand as well that they are in a financial crisis as well.

“For me, as a concerned person, I am one of those middle people, who, whichever party is in power, doesn’t really make a difference.

“I am a pensioner, I get a good pension and don’t have a lot of services to rely on, so probably for a lot of people, I would have thought it would have been quite disappointing.

“They also got such a large majority, which proves that the huge majority doesn’t mean that you can get your legislation through.”

Couple Mr and Mrs Smith said to believe that the party could ‘have done a lot better’ over the last year, especially when it comes to border forcing, stop sending money abroad and ‘looking after their own’.

Tom Harris added: “Given that they were caught in the middle of a crisis and will have to clean up the mess that was left to them, I think they have done the best they can.”

The Advertiser now ask its readers — Do you think Labour have delivered what they promised? And what could they have done better?
