Southwell Minster choirs record CD of caros for Christmas

The choirs of Southwell Minster have recorded a CD of new carols, Hush, Little Child, which has been released in time for Christmas.

The carols have been composed by Simon Mold and Antony Baldwin who have known each other since university.

Antony was Director of Music at the American Church in London for 27 years and now divides his time between London and Scotland as a freelance organist and composer.

Simon's interest in composition started as a chorister at Peterborough Cathedral where he directed a performance of one of his own choral pieces.

He has sung in several cathedral choirs and joined Leicester Cathedral Choir just in time to take part in the Richard III reinterment ceremonies.

His work has already been published. performed and broadcast — his anthem Come Praise The Saints, for choir, organ and three trumpets, was conducted by John Scott and his Candlelight Carol, which is included on the new CD, featured in Lesley's Garrett's television series Christmas Voices.

Simon said he had been looking for a cathedral choir to record a new CD and was delighted when Southwell accepted.

The CD features the Minster Consort, which comprises six lay clerks and professional sopranos from the East Midlands, as well as the Cathedral Choir which features three sections — boy choristers, girl choristers and lay clerks.

They were conducted by the Rector Chori Paul Provost and accompanied by Simon Hogan, the assistant director of music at Southwell Minster, on the organ and piano. The other musicians involved were Antony Baldwin (organ) and Lynne Hope (recorder).

The recordings were done in three sessions last year, each taking three hours.

"I am very pleased with the end result," said Simon. "I was very impressed with everybody at Southwell and it was very kind of them to work with me."

He said that the minster had been a perfect place to do the recording.

"It is a wonderful building, so atmospheric and the acoustics are excellent," he said.

The 70-minute CD features 17 new and original carols. Simon said he hoped that everybody would enjoy them.

"They are very accessible tunes that I hope people will like to listen to," he said

It has been produced by Heritage and is available from Southwell Minster priced £12. It is also available from https://www.prestomusic.com/classical/products/8504823--hush-little-child-carols-from-southwell-minster
