Getting a divorce: Legal advice and services for separated couples by Ringrose Law in Newark
More and more separated couples across the UK are being left frustrated by lengthy waits to get their divorces processed.
According to the latest figures from the Ministry of Justice, couples are being forced to wait a record delays to get their divorces finalised because government plans to fast-track proceedings with the use of regional divorce centres - also known as divorce units - have backfired.
Since being first introduced, regional divorce centres have been dogged by allegations of delays and inefficiencies as they struggle to process a huge backlog of older cases.
Delays for figures covering January until March 2019 show that the average time from petition to decree absolute is 59 weeks while the average time from petition to decree nisi is 33 weeks - up six weeks from 2018.
Earlier this year, Sir Andrew McFarlane, who is the president of the family division, said 11 centres across the country were set to be phased out and replaced by another system.
His predecessor, Sir James Munby, described the centres as having turned into “bywords for delay and inefficiency, essentially because HMCTS has been unable or unwilling to furnish them with adequate numbers of staff and judges”.
Fortunately, help is at hand.
