Heroic efforts
Sports heroes come in all shapes and sizes — it’s not just Olympic athletes or international footballers who deserve recognition for their achievements. With this in mind, Newark and Sherwood District Council is seeking help to reward some of the many local people — players, coaches and volunteers — who make a difference when it comes to sport in our community.
Every week there are countless unsung heroes whose efforts ensure that sports clubs and activities are available for participants of varying abilities, young or old.
Then there’s the many individuals and teams who have enjoyed success, either locally or at county, regional or even national level and beyond.
If you know someone who has excelled in a sporting arena or who regularly goes that extra mile in terms of organisational work or volunteering, then the council wants to hear from you.
There are 12 categories for junior, senior and club nominations, with the winners announced at the district sports awards and review at Kelham Hall in November.
“We are heading into an Olympic year so it has never been more important to reward, celebrate and encourage the sporting talent on our doorstep,” said Mr Roger Jackson, the district council’s cabinet member for leisure and culture.
New for this year is the category Community Event Of The Year, which will be decided by the public, so all the more reason to get involved and make your vote count.
Previous winners at the awards include Mr Paul Halfpenny, who was Coach Of The Year in 2010 for his work with Newark Ladies’ Hockey Club.
He summed up the behind-the-scenes efforts that ensure sporting opportunities continue to be available in Newark and Sherwood.
“Goodness knows how many hours of work a quality coach gives up just for the love of the sport,” he said.
