The carriageway on Kirkgate, Newark had started to sink, so the road was closed by Via.
A hole has appeared in the middle of the road on Kirkgate in Newark town centre, closing the road to vehicles.
A source told the Advertiser that the carriageway had started to sink, so the road was closed by Via, the company that manages highways on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, as it was deemed unsafe.
Severn Trent are currently on the scene as it is believed that there is a blockage in one of the pipes.
The incident happened on Saturday when a motorist, who doesn't want to be named, was driving down the road and his front driver's side wheel sunk into the road.
He said: " I was driving along and the road just opened up. I've been told by my insurer that this will cost over £1,000 to get fixed. It's ridiculous."
A spokesman for Nottinghamshire County Council confirmed that Severn Trent are looking into the problem and they are awaiting more information.
It is not known at this stage how long Kirkgate will be closed for, but it has also been confirmed that the one way system on Wilson Street has been suspended while Kirkgate is closed.
Severn Trent spokesperson said: "We’re currently working with the council to identify the cause of a hole in the road on Kirkgate, and will be investigating our sewer pipes for any defects.
‘If our investigations do find any problems, it will be our priority to fix it as quickly as possible."
