Reader's letter: Hopes of detailed carpark review
In September 2019, as chairman of the policy and finance committee, councillor David Lloyd asked for an agenda item, London Road Carpark Extension Options, to be withdrawn, citing “the recent announcement of the availability of significant funding through the government’s towns fund initiative and the need to undertake a wider strategic review of car parking in Newark.”
The following Septem-ber, the committee presented the proposal for the Towns Fund and there was no mention of any strategic review of car parking.
I assume it did not make the shortlist for initiatives after all.
At every subsequent meeting of the policy and finance committee there has been no mention of either the strategic review or the London Road extension options.
Dare we hope that after a two-year pause in any decision being made, that the promised review this coming Sept-ember will be made in the wider context of carpark usage in 2021, and not in 2017 when the proposal was first raised?
Indeed, could we hope the council has taken it upon themselves to analyse receipts from other nearby carparks over the last two years to ascertain whether there is any need for 36 additional car parking spaces.
Felling these beautiful, ancient trees is an act that can never be reversed; the proposal to tarmac over this land can. — M. CHESNEY, Newark.
