Balderton woman honoured for 45 years of service at Newark Hospital

One of the longest-serving volunteers at Newark Hospital has been recognised for 45 years of service.

Jane Combes, 72, of Balderton, was presented with an award and flowers by Sherwood Forest Hospitals’ director of corporate affairs, Sally Brook Shanahan, at a tea party.

Over the years Jane has volunteered in many areas of the hospital, including coffee shops, main reception, fundraising and clinic support.

Jane first became a volunteer because she wanted to give something back after visiting a relative who was a patient at the old London Road hospital site.

Jane said: “I love being a volunteer. It is very satisfying knowing that you’re helping people and the hospital.

“I’ve seen so many improvements over the years – it’s a great hospital. I’d recommend volunteering to anyone as you get so much back from what you give.”

During her time as a volunteer, Jane was bringing up her family as well as running a successful catering business with her sister, which they ran for over 20 years.

Since retiring eleven years ago, Jane has continued to keep very busy as she is a trustee of the Friends of Newark Hospital and is on the committee for a local housing association.

Jo Thornley, community involvement manager at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, said: “Dedicating 45 years to supporting patients, visitors and colleagues at one of our hospitals is remarkable.

“We are incredibly grateful to Jane and our other volunteers who bring a wealth of skills, experience, and energy to the roles they undertake.

“They make a huge impact, and we are so grateful for the time they give.”
