Hot off the press
Young reporters at Lowe’s Wong Junior School, Southwell, have published another edition of their award-winning newspaper this week.
The Wong And Only is produced every year for the Newsday competition, which this year is being organised by The Guardian newspaper.
There were 33 children, aged 10 and 11, involved in creating the 48-page paper.
It is the sixth year the school has entered the competition. Last year it won the award for the best primary school entry.
The children used news websites and the radio to find stories, which they then put into their own words.
The front page story was about a car bomb in Lahore, Pakistan, on Tuesday.
They also reported on this week’s storms, Fair Trade, Sport Relief and an evacuee day held at the school.
There were sports stories about the FA Cup semi-final draw and the Australian cricket team’s decision to pull out of a tour of Pakistan.
Teacher Mr Chris Steel said the pupils were constantly searching for new information on existing stories.
“It was an exciting experience for them to watch a story unfold and try to change what they had written,” he said.
“To see their own work in a newspaper format is a real thrill.”
Copies of The Wong And Only were sold for 50p.
