Newark Advertiser reader letters: Improvements are needed

I wasn't entirely surprised by the comments of Newark Town Council with regard to the widening of the Newark Bypass (A46), and given the rising costs.

I was living in Coddington when both it and the A17 road was realigned and even then it seemed as if it would not cope with the increasing amount of traffic travelling from west to east and vice versa.

And I never thought that the interchange with the A1 had ever properly been thought through given that traffic has to manoeuvre around two roundabouts each side of the A1.

It was probably costs that decided the matter — as seems to be the norm for this country.

Even so, the improvements proposed are required to keep traffic moving.

Some years ago when I was travelling in Holland I came across a similar road which clearly was to be developed into a dual carriageway, as here.

In the case in Holland the preparatory work had already been carried out and it only remained for the intended road surface to be placed on the foundations already in place and presumably when further finance was available.

At one time we were promised temporary traffic lights to be installed to control the flows of traffic on all of the roads leading into the town but this also never happened. — A. M. Waddington, Sutton-0n-Trent.
