Newark and Sherwood District Council met on Tuesday to discuss creating carparking associated with a building they sold to a developer.

After selling that property, next to London Road carpark Newark, they then negotiated a 25-year lease with the developer to rent land at the rear of the property, so they might lay a carpark at the cost of £150,000.

That land is a precious green space, has mature lime and sycamore trees that will need to be felled before tarring over.

It has been estimated, the total amount Newark and Sherwood District Council will be paying the developer for the carpark lease over the 25 years potentially greatly exceeds the original purchase price paid for the former social services offices, later Newark Register Offices, known as the Municipal Building in Baldertongate.

This council is seemingly not managing taxpayers’ money wisely.

Councillor Peter Harris has called for a full probe into the council’s conduct.

The people of Newark and Sherwood support Peter Harris’s call for a probe but request that it is carried out independently of the council. — STEPHEN CRANE, Balderton.
