Jonny Upton, the manager at Southwell City said at the time that it was the worst injury he had witnessed on a football pitch.

A GoFundMe was set up that has now raised £7,700 for the self-employed electrician who has not been able to work since the incident.

He has undergone four operations including skin grafts.

"I can't express enough the gratitude that I have for all of the support that I have received since the injury," said Ed Munton.

"I have been overwhelmed by the amount of people contacting me about my situation and I am so appreciative for everyone's generosity.

"Following numerous operations, hospital visits and check ups, recovery has well and truly started.

"The bones are looking good and the skin graft has taken well according to the specialists.

"I would like to reiterate my thanks to everyone for helping me during this difficult time.

"Everyone's kindness will not be forgotten and I hope to be able to thank you all in person at some stage."
