Do people in Newark think that the England team will win the Euros against Spain on Sunday?
As the England team warms up for the Euros final game on Sunday (July 14) we found out if people think it is coming home or not.
After winning the game (2-1) against The Netherlands on Wednesday (July 10), the Three Lions secured their spot in the final against Spain.
Despite having made it to the final, opinions of whether England have a chance of winning or not varied across the town, some positive and hopeful and others not as much.
“I think they definitely have a chance of winning because at the start they didn’t play very well so hopefully this will be the game where we finally play well. It would be a good time to do it,” said Danny Whyley.
William Kurby said: “I think they have chances of winning because they got through to the final and that means they are better than most teams although I do think Spain are the favourites.”
Dan Brown said: “If they play like they did yesterday they have a chance but they have to play as well as on Wednesday and probably better.”
Beth Anderson said: “Of course, they have a chance because of the way they played on Wednesday, they played better there than in all of it.”
The game will be played in Berlin at 8pm on Sunday and many pubs across Newark will be streaming the live game.
Some of these pubs include The White Hart, The Old Post Office, Old Kings Arms, Wheatsheaf, Fox and Crown and The Rutland Arms.
“They have a chance, it’s an on-off game it’s 11 vs 11 and anything can happen at football,” said Glenn Cobb.
Sandra Evans said: “I think they will because everyone thinks they will win anyway. I hope they win at least.”
Taylor Stevens said: “I don’t think they will win because the Spanish team is better.”
John Anderson: “I think they will win and I think the score will be 2-1 at extra time.”
Some stores across the country, including supermarket chains Tesco and Co-Op will be closing thousands of stores earlier on Sunday to allow their staff to watch the game.
Being the first time that the men's England team has made it to the final of a tournament held abroad, the Advertiser team decided to share their prospects for Sunday.
The Newark Advertiser editor Sharon Hodkin said: “My head says no I think Spain will win because they are the strongest side, but my heart really wants England to win.”
Advertising manager at the Newark Advertiser Andy Swiffen said: “My honest opinion I think Spain will do it, I think they are far a better team and play better.
“But I hope England do it but I think Spain will just pip England in the extra time.”
Reporter at the Newark Advertiser Fionn Burrows said: “Spain have been the best team this entire tournament and probably deserve to win.
“But there is always hope. You've got to have hope and maybe, just maybe we can defy the odds and pull it off.”
As for me, reporter Marta Tavares, I believe that England has a strong chance of winning, they made it to the final and it is a 50/50 chance for both teams.
