The Newark Advertiser found out if people think it is too early to start selling Christmas products in shops?
As Christmas items make their way to shelves, side by side with Autumn and Halloween-themed items, we asked people if it’s too early for Christmas.
As we reach the end of September and only a few days have passed since the equinox, some people refuse to let go of summer, while others are looking forward to the new season, but is it time to think about Christmas yet?
The majority of the people the Advertiser spoke to agreed that it was too early for Christmas, with some highlighting that it would make it less meaningful for children or that it was only a way for shops to make money.
Cindy Kerriage said: “I think it is just profiteering, there is no need to have it this early and not only that, but your children will get bored by the time it is Christmas.
“I pity the mums because they are being nagged because the children think Christmas is coming.”
Couple Margaret and Colin Barnet agreed that Christmas products should only be put for sale around the middle of November, as before there are still other celebrations such as Halloween and Bonfire Night.
“Years ago, it was never like that; it was probably a couple of weeks before Christmas,” said Susan Jackson.
She added: “I think that little children will think it is Christmas and they are waiting and waiting and it takes a long time to come.”
Anne Kirk believes it shouldn’t be a thought until the end of November or the beginning of December, and added that while the sun is shining, it is too early for Christmas.
Andrew Campbell said: “I personally think it is too early for Christmas, but my wife has already started buying some presents to distribute the costs over the next few months and I do think it makes sense.”
Eileen Mead agreed that it is too early to start thinking about the holidays She added: “It is early because it seems to diminish Christmas.
“Christmas is so special, and we should start celebrating it near Christmas.”
Some people we spoke to, such as Sylvia Woodhurst, said that for religious people, Christmas isn’t about presents; therefore, they believe it is too early and not something that is yet on their minds.
Dan Atkinson described the Christmas product sale as being ‘way too early’ and that it was a way of just making people spend money unnecessarily.
