95-year-old member of Norwood Park Golf Centre, Southwell talks of his love of golf
Age is nothing but a number ‘fore’ this nonagenarian who is still indulging his passion for golf.
At 95 years old, Ben Brough is still playing golf regularly at Norwood Park Golf Centre, after joining the club more than 20 years ago.
Ben first discovered golf as a student at Oxford University, and would play occasionally with his tutor. But it wasn’t until after retiring from his varied career — working as a farmer, men’s shopkeeper, and finally a management trainer over the years — that he returned to the game seriously, joining Norwood Park Golf Centre around age 70, when the club featured just nine holes.
Ben said that he enjoys golf’s competitiveness:
“Golf is competitive—and I enjoy that,” he said, “Every hole gives me a chance to say to myself, ‘I did that better than someone.’
“I may not win the competition but going around the course, there are always little wins.”
Ben added that as he is unable to play the longer main course it’s the Par 3 Club that has help him keep his golf game going.
“It’s very enjoyable exercise in the company of lovely friends, healthy, outdoors, and a great way to meet all sorts of different people,” he said.
“For me, the companionship has been the most important aspect I am so grateful to the Club for their initiatives that all help all ages in their golfing journeys - long may it continue for me."
Norwood Park has also announced that its Par 3 course has now been officially rated by England Golf for the World Handicap System (WHS), which will allow more golfers to obtain and maintain handicaps on a shorter, more accessible layout
"We’re proud of Ben and all he represents," said Paul Thornton, general manager of Norwood Park. "His love of the game is a true example of golf for life.
“And now, with our Par 3 course WHS-rated, we’re thrilled to provide a platform for more golfers—of all ages and levels—to compete, improve, and enjoy the game."
Emily Rowbottom, England Golf Club & County Support Officer added: "I am thrilled Norwood now has a rating for their Par 3 course and is the first in Nottinghamshire to do so. It further enhances and supports their golfer journey at Norwood."
