Eat My Words: We review Green Olive in Newark
The olives were juicy and the halloumi so rich and flavourful at this restaurant that I was left wanting another gyros and some extra tzatziki to take home.
There are always people in and out of the Green Olive cafe on Newark Marketplace and I had often wondered ‘what is so good about it?’ so with the sun shining, I decided to give it a go.
I decided to make the most of the good weather and sit outside. I ordered myself a black Americano with ice on the side to not only refresh my palate but my mind.
As I wasn’t particularly hungry but still craving food and wanting something as crunchy and fresh as a salad but enough to keep me going through the day, the halloumi gyros was the perfect option.
The service was quick and the gyros was a mixture of everything I wanted - flavourful, fresh and creamy and the right amount of food.
When tzatziki is as refreshing as this was, it made me realise that it is one of my favourite sauces.
The gyros also included tomatoes, onion, cilantro, and of course, halloumi, and if I missed any other ingredient, it was just as tasty as all the ones mentioned.
Cam, who came with me to enjoy the meal, copied my food choice but with a meaty version of chicken gyros.
He said: “The food was sensational, Newark doesn’t disappoint. Although there were a lot of tomatoes inside the wrap, the chicken itself was succulent.”
Considering we were at the Green Olive and we are both olive lovers we had to order some to the table. We didn’t specify which type of olives, we just knew we wanted to try some.
And let me tell you, they were so rich in flavour, so juicy, that we ate one after the other.
Bear in mind that I have a strong opinion about olives and the passion is so big that I often eat them straight from the jar but I might even risk saying that those are now some of my favourite olives.
In the end, as much as the idea of a dessert was tempting, after devouring our gyros and olives I couldn’t find space for any more food, which for the price you pay for the food it is great.
I now understand why the place seems so popular, not only because of its central location in Newark but because the food is great, the prices are accessible and the staff’s kindness makes you feel at home and want to come back.
Rain or sunshine, should definitely go to Green Olive. I only have good things to say about this place and intend to return.
Out of five:
Food: After having gyros at the Green Olive, I had to have it again over the weekend and buy tzatziki from the shop because I am now craving Greek food, that’s how tasty it was. ****
Drink: Both black Americano coffees, one with ice and one without, were very tasty. I can’t resist a good quality coffee. ****
Decor: The decor was super sustainable with wooden chairs and plants, and no sign of plastic. The green colour added to the atmosphere and made it a very tranquil and summery place. *****
Staff: The staff were friendly and helpful, asking how our food was, how they could help, and making sure we were happy and comfortable. *****
Price: Each gyro was £7.45 which is quite a good price considering the quantity and quality of the food, the olives were £3.95 and both coffees cost £5.70. The whole meal and drinks were a total of £24.55 which I believe to be very affordable. ****
