Pupils at Gunthorpe primary school took part in a Junior Masterchef at Tom Brown's brasserie.

Budding Masterchefs battled it out with the help of culinary experts in Gunthorpe.

Pupils from Gunthorpe primary school have been joining forces with Tom Brown's brasserie to take part in a Junior Masterchef challenge.

The early rounds saw 55 pupils take part in a pizza challenge where they had to design and make their own pizzas, where the best ones were chosen by the staff at the school.

The pupils in the next round were chosen after a desserts challenge, where the children made their own sweets and desserts at home, and the semi-finals saw the remaining eight pupils whip up dishes of their own choosing in just 90 minutes.

Adam Perkins, co-owner of Tom Brown's brasserie, then selected the final five students based on their dishes' presentation, flavour, creativity and the cleaniness of the pupils' work stations.

The five finalists - Oliver Stewart, eight; Jaby Shipman, 11; Hannah Bowtell, 11; Orla Cook, 10, and ten-year-old Erica Gibaldi - were then taken to Tom Brown's kitchens for their final challenges to be crowned champion.

The pupils had to whip up the perfect scrambled eggs, before watching head chef Peter Kirk decorate a strawberry cheesecake and try to replicate the presentation themselves.

Mr Perkins said: "They did really well, it's not easy to make perfect scrambled egg, it's all too easy to over-cook them or add too much seasoning - it's a tough on even when you're 30, never mind ten years old and working under pressure."

The pupils all worked very hard, and after the two tough rounds, Erica was crowned the winner and presented with a Junior Masterchef trophy.

School head teacher Claire Bills said: "It's a great scheme to build links to the community and it teaches the children how to cook, it's been fantastic.

"They've been making dishes that mean something to them and it shows how much they love to cook."

Erica said: "I thought that Hannah was going to win, I was really surprised and really pleased."
