Jury continues to work on verdict in Southwell plastic surgeon Dr Peter Brooks’ attempted murder trial
The jury in the trial of a former plastic surgeon's attempted murder trial has been unable as yet to reach a verdict after deliberations.
Dr Peter Brooks, of Southwell, faces charges of attempted murder, attempted arson with intent to endanger life, and possession of a bladed article.
These charges relate to an incident on January 14, 2021, at the Halam Hill residence of his colleague, consultant Mr Graeme Perks. During the incident, Mr Perks sustained a severe stab wound that reportedly left him with just a 5% chance of survival.
The prosecution alleges that Dr Brooks cycled from his home in Southwell to Mr Perks' residence in Halam, armed with a knife, crowbar, fuel canisters, a lighter, and matches, intending to kill Mr Perks. It is suggested that Dr Brooks wanted Mr Perks "out of the way" due to Mr Perks' involvement in disciplinary procedures against Dr Brooks at their workplace.
Throughout the trial, which began on March 10, the court has heard testimony from forensic experts, crime scene investigators, police officers, and medical professionals.
Dr Brooks has chosen not to attend the trial, not to be represented by a lawyer, and not to present any evidence in his defence.
Judge The Honourable Mr Justice Pepperall has emphasized the seriousness of the case and has instructed the jury that there is no pressure of time to reach their verdict.
The jury was sent to consider the verdict in a surgeon’s attempted murder trial on Wednesday (April 2).
With the jury unable to come to a decision, proceedings are set to resume on Monday (April 7).
