Labour candidate for Newark Saj Ahmad loses race against Conservative Robert Jenrick




The Labour candidate for Newark says she supports her fellow MPs across the county after losing out to historical seat holder Robert Jenrick.

Saj Ahmad who has been campaigning for the Newark seat for the past six weeks lost the race to Mr Jenrick, who won 3,572 votes more.

The candidate has been in and around Newark engaging with the community and spreading her party’s policies and beliefs and was always sure to say that people are craving change.

After losing the election to the Conservative MP who has held the seat since 2014, she posted on her social media supporting other party members who won a seat across Nottinghamshire.

The post reads: “It wasn’t to be for us in Newark, but I’m happy to see so many Labour gains across the country and especially here in the East Midlands and Nottinghamshire.

“Looking forward to seeing lots of local Labour MPs do great things for our area.”

Saj Ahmad is a Nottingham City councillor, who has experience and involvement with trade unions, and a day job working at the highest levels of government in the cyber security sector.

She was born and bred in Nottinghamshire and came from a working-class background.

When the polls closed yesterday (July 4) at 10pm, she posted: “Whatever the result, I want to thank everyone, from the bottom of my heart, for your incredible support!

“It’s been an utter privilege to be your candidate.”
