Reader’s letter: Lasting legacy
In view of the huge amount of house building that has been evident in the locality in recent years, you would have thought more consideration would have been given to increasing amenities in Newark for the people occupying these properties.
We have some excellent sports facilities now at the YMCA and Newark Sports Centre but there are definitely gaps in these provisions that could be fulfilled by better use of land currently being considered for even more new houses.
I refer specifically to the Lilley and Stone School site which, due to the lack of maintenance since its closure in 2016, has now become a haven for wildlife and nature, and could be a wonderful space and amenity for the community.
Surely this unique site needs to be utilised much more imaginatively to provide a lasting legacy for the young people of Newark before it is lost under another round of bricks and mortar. — J. Riley, via email.
