Leaflet blitz to tackle bad parking

Warning notices will be put on the windscreens of badly-parked cars in Southwell as part of a police crackdown on vehicles obstructing pavements.

The operation is part of a police purge on parking problems.

The police will work with traffic wardens to tackle the issue.

Police are responsible for dealing with cars causing an obstruction while traffic wardens are responsible for cars parked on double yellow lines or in unsuitable areas.

Mr Peter Harris, chairman of Southwell Safer Neighbourhood Group, said the problem was getting worse because the rules had not been enforced properly in the past.

He said the problem was particularly bad on Station Road.

Mr Chris Yates said he had approached the police about the issue and was told there was nothing they could do.

Pc Tony Hayes said that was not the case.

He said: “At the moment, the law is that someone with a pushchair or a disabled person in a wheelchair has to be able to get past the car on the pavement.

“Some cars park half on the pavement and if they didn’t then the road would be blocked but the problem comes when they completely obstruct the pavement.”

Pc Hayes said he had leaflets that could be given to the Police Community Support Officers to put on cars to tell drivers their poor parking had been noted.
