Newark Library reopens after maintenance and repair work completed
Newark Library has officially reopened — with some regulars returning on the dot of nine.
After a seven month closure for essential maintenance work and repairs following vandalism which saw the building damaged, Newark Library has once again opened its doors today (July 25).
Assistant library manager Dean Ford said: “It’s fabulous to have reopened and get it all back together finally.
“We’re looking forward to seeing our regular customers that we see in daily to use the computers.”
The first customer back in the library was one such regular, Kate Koppana, who said she was very happy to be back.
She added: “I was the first person in the library.
“I came regularly before the closure to use the computer and to borrow books.
“It’s wonderful, it is a privilege to have it.”
Also among the first back in the library was Anita Collingson, who also regularly visited the library.
“I usually come in and search for the books — sometimes for training and sometimes for reading. Mostly for work but I’m cutting back and doing more reading — it’s something to do,” she said.
Barbara Perry, who also regularly uses the library to borrow books, added: “I am happy the library is open again, because I can walk here. I’ve had to go in my car to the other libraries.”
The scheduled maintenance work has seen improvements made to the library’s heating and cooling systems, to better regulate the temperature and make the space more comfortable for customers and staff.
Some of the roof windows have also been blocked off, and a dark film placed over others to help prevent the building acting like a greenhouse.
Sections of new carpet and shelving have also been installed after the vandalism incident, which saw a number of high level roof windows smashed, caused water damage inside the building.
The reopening comes in time for young readers to sign up at the library and take part in the summer reading challenge Marvellous Makers which runs until Sunday, September 1.
Children aged four to 11 years are challenged to read six or more library books over the summer, with rewards for every book they read and a medal and certificate if they complete the challenge. A bite sized version of the challenge is also available for under threes.
To celebrate the reopening of the library a family fun day will also be held on Saturday, August 17.
