Lighting the way

With the Olympics propaganda machine in full swing, it seems the nation is expected to embrace London 2012 as the country’s greatest-ever achievement before the event has even begun.

The organisers are keen for everyone to feel involved regardless of failed ticket-buying attempts, not to mention their need to justify the many millions being spent staging the spectacle.

One way everyone can get involved, however, is to support those carrying the Olympic Torch through the Newark area on Thursday, June 28, on day 41 of the flame’s 70-day nationwide journey en route to the opening ceremony.

These people, young and old, have been chosen for their achievements, sporting contributions and community work, and locally include young brain tumour sufferer Sam White, community stalwart Robert Beall, of Smith’s Timber Merchants, and Jonathan Barker, who has run a Tae Kwon Do group for 27 years.

Regardless of political opinion as to the benefits of hosting the games, the torchbearers have earned their moment of glory, so don’t forget to give them a cheer on June 28.

If for whatever reason you miss the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the torch, don’t despair — it’s always possible there will be some left to buy on eBay (funds permitting).

It’s good to hear that the disused Newark Magistrates’ Court building and adjoining former police station could become part of the Newark College campus.

All too often vacated public buildings quickly become an eyesore, so the college’s interest in using the site is a win-win situation all round.
