Southern Link Road work on schedule say developers Urban and Civic, as Hawton Road due to reopen after six month closure

Work on the Southern Link Road is progressing at pace and on schedule.

Once complete the £100m link road project will connect the A1 to the A46 south of Newark via a 5km stretch of road and serve new housing and businesses in the area.

Hawton Road, which has been closed to cars and pedestrians since February, is now due to partially reopen by the start of next week, with traffic management signals in place.

Work has taken place to rebuild and realign the road around plans for future housing on the Middlebeck development.

It has also been raised by two metres with drainage and ponds running alongside to alleviate flooding issues.

A full reopening of Hawton Road is due in early 2025.

By the end of the year the roundabout which will connect access to the A1 at Fernwood, opposite the Welcome Break Services, is expected to be complete.

From this roundabout vehicles will join a stretch of new road — formerly part of Staple Lane — and then on to another new roundabout that connects to an existing section of link road which was built in 2017.

Staple Lane will be permanently closed to through traffic, and residential access will only come from the existing London Road junction.

After this the central section of the link road, from Hawton Road to Bowbridge Lane, is targeted for completion in early 2025.

Completion of the final stretch, which will see the link road connected to the A46 via a new roundabout near Farndon, is planned for 2026.

Urban and Civic project director, Mike van den Berg, said: “We’re proud to be leading the delivery of the Southern Link Road, which is a significant piece of infrastructure for Newark.

“The work to build the road is progressing well, with Hawton Road set to reopen imminently, followed by the new roundabout link to the A1 by the Welcome Break services, on schedule to open before the end of this year.”

“We know through working closely with Newark and Sherwood District Council and local communities, just how important this road will be to the town’s prosperity and the future expansion of Middlebeck.”

Other works works have also taken place alongside the comtruction of the road such as the removal of overhead pylons to move power cabling underground.
