Nine sacks of rubbish were filled when Fernwood’s own Wombles took to the streets at the weekend with bin sacks and litter pickers.

Cans, bottles and other materials including car parts and a discarded hard-drive were among the items removed from footpaths and the undergrowth along Hollowdyke Lane and on the B6326 near The Tawny Owl.

Fernwood resident Mr Antony Barson, who organised the clean-up, said: “It was a very successful morning, but it would be nicer if the rubbish had not been dropped in the first place.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who turned out, including our youngest helpers Lucas Halfpenny and Hollie Walker both year four pupils at Chuter Ede Primary School in Fernwood. They were brilliant and collected lots of litter.”
