A woman is in a critical condition following after a crash between a motorbike and a bicycle, in Newark.

It happened on Lombard Street just before 7am, near to Pizza Hut.

The woman who has been taken to hospital was riding the bicycle.

Mrs Paula Ellwood, who works at Newark Bus Station, said: "I got here to open up and I heard a thud.

“It was quite a thud and there was also a bit of a shout.

“I went out and saw a pedestrian in the road.

“I also saw a bin lorry there.”

A spokesman for East Midlands Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 6.37am on to Lombard Street in Newark.

"The caller reported that there had been a road traffic collision between a motorcycle and a pushbike.

"We sent a paramedic in an ambulance car, a crewed ambulance and the air ambulance, and one patient with serious injuries was taken to Queen's Medical Centre by land ambulance."

The crash happened close to the end of the Castlegate one-way system, which is in place as part of Severn Trent's four-year sewer work improvement plan.

Marshalls Coaches said that all of its services in and out of the town were "seriously delayed."

However, the road has now re-opened.

Anyone with information should call Nottinghamshire Police on 101.
