The medieval palace of the Archbishops of York, next to Southwell Minister, could be restored to its former glory.

The minster has secured £155,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The money will help it to develop a £1m bid for more lottery funding to help the renovation of the palace, a former home of Cardinal Wolsey.

The Dean of Southwell, The Very Rev John Guille, said: "These initial funds are a fantastic boost and will enable us to begin planning for the work to preserve and restore this hidden historical gem for future generations."
