Reader’s letter: Are we to be subject to ‘the madness of crowds’?
Our new government is intent on stimulating growth as the answer to our economic woes but they are promoting cheap green energy from renewables.
It might be relevant to consider what has happened in Germany.
In 2021, a coalition took over the German government when GDP growth was 2.7% but then, the socialists, greens and liberals pledged to implement a green revolution.
Almost immediately the economy slowed, and growth was reduced to 0.1% in 2023.
Now, instead of growth, the German economics minister is forecasting a decline in their economic output to minus 0.2 %. But, despite this, he is still promising 1.1% growth for 2025 and a healthy 1.6% for 2026.
Their plans have not, so far, worked for three years but he expects the German people to believe that things will improve beginning next year.
It might be relevant that Federal elections are due and ‘green growth’ will be a major issue in them.
Someone once said that madness is doing the same thing again and again but expecting a different result.
Are we to be subject to ‘the madness of crowds’? — ROBERT SHEPPARD, Beckingham.
