Reader's letter: Maintain masks
In his As I See It column (August 5) Robert Jenrick MP said that we “need to continue with self-responsibility and a common sense approach making sure we keep the virus under control.”
Seems like wishful thinking as while we can control what we do, we cannot the actions of others.
For instance, wouldn’t the continuing of mandatory face masks, at a time when cases are surging and daily covid deaths are shockingly high (over one hundred at the time of writing) be a common-sense approach by the Government?
It is as though on so called freedom day they abandoned their responsibility to us. One that is supposed to be the first duty of government — the defence of the nation and safety of the people.
What is our MP’s explanation of why in Portugal, Cyprus, Malta, Spain and other European countries face masks are a legal requirement in a number of settings?
Perhaps he feels that they have all got it wrong along with Singapore (42 deaths in total) who quickly masked up at the start of the pandemic. — MARK ILES, Newark.
