Newark man appears before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on several charges

Detectives investigating a break-in at an elderly victim’s home have placed a man before the courts.

The victim was awoken by a noise downstairs at his house in Lawrence Street, Newark, around 3am on Monday, February 19.

A suspect fled the scene on foot before returning and throwing a brick through a window.

The victim then discovered seven bottles of alcohol were missing from his address.

Police were called to the scene and located a suspect nearby who was arrested.

While the arrest was taking place, one officer was spat at and kicked, with damage also being caused to the inside of a police van.

Hospital staff also reported being verbally abused when the suspect was taken to hospital with injuries.

Thirty-four-year-old Shamus Doyle, of Newark, has been charged with burglary, assault on an emergency worker, two counts of criminal damage and racially aggravated harassment.

He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (February 20) and was remanded in custody until March 19.

Detective Sergeant Ben Skellern, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Break-ins can have a serious emotional impact on victims, particularly those who are elderly or vulnerable.

“That is why we have dedicated teams of detectives working hard to investigate burglaries and place suspects before the courts.”
