Nottinghamshire Police arrest 33-year-old man after spate of burglaries in Newark and Retford town centres
An arrest has been made following a spate of burglaries which has seen businesses’ windows smashed and items stolen.
A 33-year-old man was detained yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, August 13) on suspicion of burglary.
Officers had been investigating the recent spate of burglaries in Newark and Retford town centres, which were being treated as linked and the work of a single offender.
A priority crime team had been tasked with tracking the burglar and making an arrest, and CCTV and forensic inquiries were actively pursued to identify the culprit.
The man’s arrest, in Retford, follows extensive inquiries into the burglary series, which saw a number of businesses targeted and broken into between July 18 and August 8.
In Newark those targeted included Curl Up ‘N’ Dye hair salon, City Goldsmiths, the YMCA charity shop, Oxfam, K&H, and Kings Turkish Barber, with items taken including charity boxes, jewellery, and hair straighteners.
Shannon Donnelly, owner of Curl Up ‘N’ Dye, described the break-in at her salon, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 8, as ‘horrible’.
She added: “I work six days a week and I work hard, and then for someone to just come in and pick up what they want, I’m upset but angry at the same time.”
Inspector Charlotte Ellam, District Commander for Newark and Sherwood, said: “Burglary is an extremely upsetting and invasive crime and I hope that this arrest will provide some reassurance to the local community.
“While we have now arrested a suspect in connection with this recent spike in commercial burglaries, I also want to reassure our residents and businesses that we won’t let up in our ongoing efforts to tackle, reduce, and prevent burglary.
“We will continue to investigate reports and support our local businesses in any way we can, including sharing crime prevention advice.
“This arrest should be a stark reminder to anyone thinking of committing offences in Newark or surrounding areas that we will catch them and robustly deal with them.
“Additionally, I’d like to remind local businesses to remain vigilant to help us crack down on burglars and for people to report any suspicious activity to police immediately.”
