Newark businesses to close on Monday to pay respects to The Queen on the day of Her Majesty's state funeral




Many businesses around Newark will close on Monday for The Queen’s funeral as a sign of respect.

From local businesses to national supermarket chains, respects to Queen Elizabeth II are paid either with a full or partial closure on Monday.

The date, September 19, was declared an a national bank holiday by King Charles III and will mark the end of a period of national mourning.

Newark businesses from different areas of industry such as N.V us cards, Honey Trap lingerie, Bentley’s fish & chips restaurant and takeaway, and the Stray’s coffee shop will be fully closed on Monday.

Diana Scrimshaw from the Yum Yum Sweet shop said: “We will be fully closed on Monday,

“We don’t think many shops will be open, most people will want to watch the funeral on the TV and it’s a day to mourn The Queen.”

Other businesses such as Tree, the cafe on Stodman Street, and Gata Tattoo will be closed as usual as it it isn't a trading day for them.

The cafe Domingo Amore will be fully open on Monday and running as many people will be off work as it is a bank holiday.

Chains such as Boots, Holland & Barrett, White Rose WR, and Greggs are waiting to hear from their head offices as to what is proposed.

“We will be open, we haven’t heard anything about it and to be honest bank holidays mean nothing to us, we are open every day of the year except Christmas day and Easter.” said Jake Waterhouse from Sports Direct.

Meanwhile, Wilko, Specsavers, EE BT, Oxfam and Argos have declared full closures on the day of the state funeral.

“Following the announcement of the state funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Monday, September 19, Specsavers Newark, along with stores across the country, will be closed on that day as a mark of respect” said Sarbjeet Soar, the store director at Specsavers Newark.

“The store will reopen as normal the following day. We are contacting customers with appointments on Monday to make new arrangements.”
