Youngsters who love to sing can take part in an X-factor style event for the chance of becoming a chorister.

It is hoped the event will increase numbers in the children’s choir at Newark Parish Church.

There are only seven members. The choir director, Mr George Richford, wants about 20.

Mr Richford said they were looking for girls and boys and that those auditioning could do so with any type of music.

The choir not only sings in church. It performs at community events, like the switch-on of the Christmas lights, and weddings and takes paid-for bookings.

Mr Richford said the choir offered a diverse social life with away days, trips out and holidays.

Choristers receive singing lessons in the song school, which is next to the church and has just been renovated with £30,000 from the Magnus Educational Foundation.

Children aged seven to 13 can audition during an open day at the church, from 10.30am on March 13.

Anyone interested should text choir to 80818, call Mr Richford on 01636 612650 or email choir@stmarysnewark.org

The song school is also looking to set up an adult choir after Easter. The last adult choir disbanded about six years ago.
