Their Royal Highnesses the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge came to Westminster to open the new Parliamentary session.

I was honoured to be invited as Lord President of the Council to take part in the Royal Procession, walking in front of Their Royal Highnesses alongside Lord McFall, the Lord Speaker.

Her Majesty’s Speech, which was read by the Prince of Wales, set out the government’s legislative agenda for the next 12 months, which will deliver on the promises that have been made to the British people.

This government is committed to getting Britain back on track following the coronavirus pandemic.

Her Majesty’s government will do everything it can to make our streets safer, clear the NHS backlog that was created by the pandemic, and boost the UK’s economic output.

Over the past 2½years, the British people have been incredibly resilient. The challenges that our country has faced have only worsened. covid and the war in Ukraine have created real issues for the UK economy.

However, this government will continue to do all that it can to tackle the rising cost of living and strengthen the British economy.

We intend to bring forward over 30 bills in this Parliamentary session. Each of those Bills is central to delivering on these priorities.

One of the Bills that will be central to delivering on the people’s priorities will be the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill. This Bill is fundamentally important, as the government seeks to give people the opportunities they want, where they live. The Levelling Up Bill will lay the foundations for all of England to benefit from a devolution deal.

This means that in every part of the UK, the power to change where you live, can be exercised as close to the voter as possible, with local people making decisions that affect you locally.

Another Bill which was announced in Her Majesty’s Speech was the Energy Security Bill. With the war in Ukraine continuing, the government is pulling at every lever to help people with the cost of living.

The Energy Security Bill from the government will seek to maintain a safe and secure energy supply, helping to protect consumers against fluctuations in international pricing.

This Bill will also launch the first ever large-scale hydrogen heating trial.

If we want to move away from harmful gases, the potential use of Hydrogen is an incredibly important innovation.

Among the many other Bills the government has announced, one more stands out to me, the National Security Bill.

We have never faced a bigger threat to our national security, and this is a threat the government and the Prime Minister takes incredibly seriously.

The government will use the Bill to update our laws relating to espionage to tackle modern threats to our national security.

The Bill will also allow the government to tackle such activity at an earlier stage by expanding the ability to prosecute for the preparation of such acts.

All of the Bills that I have gone through fall alongside a whole suite of other measures that will deliver on the priorities of the British people.

This Parliamentary session is about delivery. Delivering on the promises we made to the British people. Delivering safer streets. Delivering a better economy. Delivering more jobs. Delivering an even greater United Kingdom.
