Sherwood Forest MP Michelle Welsh pays tribute to the volunteers across constituency this National Volunteer Week




As National Volunteers’ Week comes to a close, an MP has praised the work of volunteers she has met across her constituency.

Sherwood Forest MP Michelle Welsh MP has paid tribute to the contribution of those in the volunteer sector for their “selfless commitment and inspiring community spirit.”

Since her election in June 2024, Ms Welsh visited with many different groups and charities across her area, which rely on the hard work of volunteers to helping communities to stay connected and thrive.

Organisations range from grassroots community centres, to flooding emergency response teams, but all connected by their drive to make a real difference in the areas that they live.

Ms Welsh said: “Every one of these groups — and many more I haven’t yet had the chance to visit — are run by people who give their time not for recognition, but out of a genuine desire to help others.

“Their kindness, determination and community pride are the backbone of Sherwood Forest.

“This Volunteers’ Week, I want to say a heartfelt thank you. Your efforts do not go unnoticed — and you are truly appreciated.”

Among the organisation visited by The Sherwood Forest MP is the Ollerton-based mental health support group for men, In Sam’s Name, where volunteers offer hope, empathy, and solidarity for those struggling with their mental wellbeing.

Another Olerton group is the Lifespring Church, which delivers food parcels, community meals, and pastoral care with the help fo volunteers, supports some of the most vulnerable members the community.

Lowdham FLAG (Flooding Local Action Group), has been a familiar name in recent years as they provide a positive example of grassroots resilience, where volunteers give up their time to prepare for and respond to flooding, helping keep residents safe and informed during emergencies.

Elsewhere in her Ms Welsh has met with Calverton Miners Welfare Trustees, who protect and manage a vital community asset so that it remains a hub for modern-day events and sports.

Volunteers’ Week runs from 1–7 June each year and celebrates the contribution of millions of people across the UK who give their spare time to help others.
