Musician makes the right pitch
A violinist has won the Bingham and District Rotary Club Young Musician of the Year competition.
Marianne Sutton (9) impressed judges at the final of the contest, held at Robert Miles Junior School, Bingham, on Wednesday.
She performed Dance Of The Snowman from The Snowman and Sicillienne by Maria Theresia Von Paradis.
Marianne, of Kneeton Road, East Bridgford, a pupil at St Peter’s Primary School, East Bridgford, has been playing the violin since she was four.
She successfully auditioned for a place with the National Children’s Orchestra late last year.
She came highly commended in last year’s competition and said she was shocked she won this time.
“I was really nervous before I played but I enjoyed doing it,” she said.
The judges said they decided to give Marianne the top prize because not only was her playing outstanding, but they really enjoyed her overall performance.
Marianne, who also played the piano in the competition, was awarded a glass bell and a voucher worth £50 to use at Sherbourne Sound music shop in Radcliffe to record a CD in their studio.
She said: “I’m really excited about that. I can’t wait.”
There were two highly commended runners-up, who received a certificate and a £15 voucher for Sherbourne Sound.
They were given to Chloe Buttery (10) a pupil at Keyworth Primary School, on the flute and guitarist Isobel Carlin (11) from St Peter’s Primary School, East Bridgford.
The annual Rotary Club competition regularly attracts entrants from across the district.
The finalists were chosen from the piano, brass, woodwind and strings preliminary heats earlier this year.
