Musicians to mark school completion
A week-long programme of concerts is planned to celebrate the completion of a school’s new buildings.
A series of concerts at the Minster School, Southwell, begins on March 1 with a performance by the school’s concert band and members of the Art Supports Group, a group made up of young performers in Nottinghamshire.
The concert starts at 7.30pm in the school hall and entry is free.
The last concert in the programme will be Haydn’s Creation on March 8 at 7.30pm at Southwell Minster. Tickets are £8 or £5 concessions.
Haydn’s Creation was the first piece played at a concert marking the amalgamation of the Minster Grammar School and the Edward Cludd Secondary School in 1976.
It will be performed by the school’s junior department and members of the Old Southwellians’ Association, whose members include former pupils of the Minster Grammar School, Edward Cludd Secondary School and the Minster School.
The school’s director of music, Mr Duncan Lloyd, is a former Minster School pupil and performed at the 1976 concert.
The chairman of the school’s fund-raising committee, Mrs Marina Thompson, said: “With the school having specialist status in humanities and music it was thought that the best way of celebrating the new buildings was with a whole host of concerts.
“We wanted to open the school up to members of the community and former pupils so they could come and have a look round and hear some beautiful music.
“Mr Lloyd chose to do Haydn’s Creation as the final concert and it seems particularly appropriate as he performed in it the first time and now he will be conducting it.
“We are expecting around 100 ex-pupils to return to the school for the concert and take part in some way either by playing an instrument or singing alongside the young performers from the school.”
On March 4 Newstead Abbey Singers will perform and on March 5 the Red Hot Jazz Band and the Minster School Jazz band will perform.
Both concerts are at 7.30pm in the school recital room. Tickets are £5 or £3 concessions.
Lunchtime concerts will take place at the school throughout the week.
