Although it is not yet clear what will be done with the Grade II* listed building, a retail unit would almost certainly be welcomed to the town centre.

Building society The Nottingham moved to Bridge Street in 2018.

A Newark and Sherwood District Council spokesman said: “The old Nottingham is a Grade II* listed building and appears to have recently been sold (subject to contract).

"While the buyer of the building is not known to the council at this stage, it is an impressive, medieval timber-framed building and we will be keen to work with the new owner to secure its future and make sure that any redevelopment is sympathetic.”
