Newark Town Council picks The Sidings as name for new development at Hill Vue Gardens

A name steeped in history has been chosen for a new street.

Three suggestions with historic meaning were put forward by Newark Town Council for a new development at Hill Vue Gardens.

The area was built up by the Cafferata family in 1862 who were responsible for the building of many of Newark’s homes at that time.

The family ran Newark Plaster Company at Beacon Hill which owned quarries, mines, a plaster mill, brickworks and a boiler-making workshop.

At its height, the company had 500 employees, producing the famous Cafferata bricks which were used to build as many as 300,000 homes.

Out of the three suggestions, Newark and Sherwood District Council picked The Sidings as the name for the new street at Hill Vue Gardens.

The name was chosen as all the streets in the area were built as workers’ housing when the railway sidings were there.

Another possible option was Brick Kiln Row/Way as the brick kiln would have been in view of the workers who lived nearby.

The final suggestion was Redmond Drive after Redmond Parker Cafferata — the son of the family who died in 1913.
