Nearly 4,000 homes will have council tax bills reduced by £150 thanks to scheme created by Newark and Sherwood District Council with government funds
Nearly 4,000 households will have their council tax bills reduced by £150 under a hardship scheme created by Newark and Sherwood District Council with government funds.
As part of the response to the covid-19 pandemic, local authorities, including the district council, have been provided with funding to give additional help to all households of working age who qualify for Council Tax Support.
Through the hardship scheme the council has in total made 3,861 awards, with £577,980 credited to council tax accounts.
This discount has been spread out over the remaining balances to reduce monthly payments from the beginning of this month.
Council leader David Lloyd said: “We appreciate that many households will have experienced a financial squeeze during the covid-19 pandemic and this additional support will go some way to relieving the financial distress.”
Council Tax Support helps people on low incomes pay their council tax.
Residents may receive Council Tax Support if they pay council tax and their income and capital (savings and investments) are below a certain level, irrespective of whether they rent or own their home.
